Oh my! Is this your young man enlisting? :) Details!

Yep, it's all official, he's in the navy. He got what he wanted and will be a nuke. He was sworn in my his JROTC teacher after school yesterday. He will report to boot camp in December, at Great Lakes up by Chicago. Lucky him. Brrrr.

In case anyone wondered enlisting form overseas is a pain, and right now it is hard to get what you want because people are re-enlisting rather than getting out and risking the job market. Enlistment bonuses are way down too, because retention is way up.

Congratulations! How exciting! My father and most of my ancestors on his side, were all Navy men (Seabees, Intel, mechanical, etc. - I broke tradition with the Army). They were all very proud of their service, as I am sure you are proud of your son :) Glad he could get the job that he wanted, and it's a good one... although, I don't like the idea of Chicago either. Dad was from Chicago, which is probably why I was born in Florida! And how cool that he could have his JROTC teacher do the swearing in! I would have LOVED to have had my mentors perform this ceremony with my parents present (mine was in MEPS with a bunch of strangers) how lovely, and so much more personal!

Since we are overseas there is no MEPS and they needed an officer so the Colonel volunteered. Ironically he was sworn into the Navy while wearing his Air Force JROTC uniform by a Air Force officer while on an Army base. Also in attendance were two of his three brothers, Sergeant Foot his other JRTOC teacher, and also Chief Nesnik--SeaBee, neighbor, friend and fantastic ball planner along with his wife and 2 sons. I am glad I was there as in all likelihood I won't be able to make it to the graduation from bootcamp since Malawi is nowhere near Chicago. I am sure there will be plenty of people there cheering for him though.

We too have a strong military background. My husband and 2 of his brothers were Navy as is one of our nephews. One uncle, both grandfathers, and a nephew were Army and one uncle and one great uncle were Marines. No Coast Guard yet. If all goes right Cody will be the third submariner in the family and the second nuke. (And maybe the first officer. Hey a mom can dream!)
