Gabriel the weird toe shoes are Vibram Five Fingers produced by the same Vibram company that makes the soles for a lot of high end hiking shoes. As to why he is wearing them with flip flops I couldn't say.
Actually as we had rented the entire island there were very few locals, just the island staff (of 3) who we rarely saw. I know they were there though because someone lit all the lanterns at night and there was hot water for tea in the morning.
Dave's explanation is that he wanted to wear the toe shoes when he was snorkling but he doesn't like wearing them when they are wet so he needed flip flops for afterwards and was simply to lazy to carry them from the tent site down to the beach.

Nomads - I am STILL puzzled by this. We were staying on an island in the lake and Dave showed up at the beach like this.
