Sad, but I think it's happening everywhere. Here in Cambodia the Buddhist Institute with its magnificent Khmer-style architecture was dwarfed by the ugly and massive casino-hotel building.
That is a fabulous juxtaposition! Although it may be sad in some ways, at least they didn't knock the castle down. It's amazing to see the layers of history in some cities. That's not as much the case here in Phoenix!
It's an interesting juxtapositio. I don't think it's bad to have both together. The most interesting cities are though that blend old and new, and there is much beautiful modern architecture out there.
Frankfurt was so badly bombed during WWII that very little remains of it's original architecture. I find it amazing that this tower is still there at all. It is the Eschenheimer Turm built in 1428. Today it houses a cafe.
I kinda like the contrast of the old and new, it makes me appreciate both all the more.

That's an amazing view. That tall tower going up behind the old one makes me think of a grown son looking after his dad!
