Oh yeah, that's a good question! I've never seen apples like those before... Another thought that came to my mind was: hm, is that eatable? What stuff did they put on that it looks like that? But it is a great picture anyway, and I think it is really unique!
I am happy I could make you happy btw :-)) I think they offer some american food at "real" (see this link), too. It is just not the same for me because I actually don't have a car and so I don't get there, it's to far for me to go by bus (although it is in Wiesbaden, too).
It isn't a sticker or photoshop. The design is actually part of the apple skin. I think (like Gandalf and Grayson) that it must have been stickers during the last few weeks of growth causing blanching of the skin underneath or maybe a bleaching agent. I washed them and ate them. They tasted like apples. Kids were impressed though.
Wow, that's one-of-a-kind!! Is that given as a present during the Chinese New Year?
