  4. I am grossed out. It looks like a snake or eel but is seriously slimy! Eeeew ick ick ick.
Pak Haryono called it a belut. I think it must be some sort of caecelian (a legless amphibian). He also said it was yummy if fried. At which point I felt my face do all sorts of strange movements, none of which could be considered polite or culturally sensitive.

  9. Well, Shannon, when you DO find out what it is for sure, you just HAVE to tell us. When I saw the first photo, I thought "worm" (big worm, LOL). Then I clicked on the photo to enlarge it, and decided no, not a worm. Not a snake either, though. Mystery!

  11. you know what, people in my country DO EAT THAT!
they will dry the eel, put some herbs and salt...then deep fry in hot oil!

  12. Eeek!!! It sure does look slimy. The first photo fooled me to believe it was an ordinary garden worm.

The second one freaks me out.

What the heck is it? A mutated worm? *giggles*

  25. The only belut we have here in Hawaii is actually spelled "bAlut". It is hard to be culturally sensitive...Correct me if I'm wrong in any of this but it is a duck egg that is buried in the ground for about 15 days & then taken out and eaten. Not just any regular duck egg mind you, one that has a semi-developed fetus inside. At our swap meets, they sell them in huge pickle jars as snacks for passers by. Last week, when we left the swap meet there was a half eaten balut under my truck. (Keep in mind it is semi developed) It was the saddest, grossest thing I'd seen in a long time. It is however, a Filipino delicacy!
