The design is actually part of the apple skin. I think (like Gandalf and Grayson) that it must have been stickers during the last few weeks of growth causing blanching of the skin underneath or maybe a bleaching agent. I washed them and ate them. They tasted like apples. I've never seen apples like those before... Another thought that came to my mind was: hm, is that eatable?
